No commentsTHE FUTURE IS PLASTICS!!!
I was thinking I should share this really awesome thing that I found out while I was in San Fransisco. Well I found out a couple awesome things, but this one is something we should all care about, okay?
I was given a gift certificate to Amoeba Music in San Fransisco so I was, of course, looking through the Japanese import section. And that’s when I found a 2 disc compilation of early 80’s Japanese New Wave. After listening to it in my friends’ apt enuff to drive them crazy, I decided that I would go back to Amoeba and see if they had albums from my two favorite bands on the comp, Plastics and P-Model. And they did!!! So I bought Welcome Plastics and In A Model Room
I cannot reccomend these two albums enuff!!! They are both very brilliant… and unknown to me at the time…Polysics covered both of them: Good by Plastics appears on the Polysics best of, “Hey! Bob! My Friend!” and Great Brain by P-Model appears on a more recent Polysics album, “Karate House”.
1. Plastics – Welcome Plastics
Plastics sounds like Devo and the B-52’s (especially early B-52’s…not love shack, more like Dance This Mess Around) had a baby and it was fronted by Hiro and Kayo of Polysics. So yeah, it’s got that more sparse new wave jitteryness of the 80’s bands I just mentioned, but fronted by both a boy and a girl who are more into yelping and squeaking than singing.
But it’s not just the sound of Plastics that I love, but the lyrics also. Sung almost entirely in English, Plastics lyrics are simple but scathing in their attitude. Most are about how cookie cutter everything and how we lust after new new new! My favorite being De Luxe where they sing, “Dancing in the disco disease/Jogging in the dirty air/Smashing up all the big hamburger/Oh what a deluxe life”. The song continues like that, mockingly pointing out all modern convieniences, and finishing with the band chanting De Luxe life!! over and over. : )
here are some you tube links so you can see them even if you can’t find the alubm:
So, I don’t have quite as much to say about P-Model, though I think they are awesome, too. P-Model certainly sounds a bit more like Polysics–their sound is much more rock oriented and complete with shout along punk choruses. Unfortunately, with everything being sung entirely in Japanese I feel like I’m not getting the full effect. Here’s a vid, tho:
So I’ll finish with this: These records are kinda hard to find. However, I’m pretty sure that there is a torrent for the entire P-Model discography floating around, so I’m sure ur kids of the superfuture so you can do it. Other than that, try finding the Mutant Sounds blog, he has In a Model Room up for download (oh and he has their second album, Landsale, up for download too!!). Plastics, on the other hand, I know you can find torrents for. So I hope that you will find these amazing bands!! You could even tryin Music Stack or Gemma. Goo luck and I hope you will enjoy it!!
